The Whitehall Road Sessions
Thursday 22 April 2021 | Debussy Syrinx and Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp
The first in a weekly series of livestreamed concerts from Opera North’s rehearsal space in Leeds, this programme celebrates the power of woodwind and harp, both solo and within small ensembles, to transport the listener to far-off places, with three works by Debussy performed by instrumentalists from the Orchestra of Opera North.
A miraculous miniature for solo flute, Syrinx, is followed by a harp setting of one of Debussy’s graceful, impressionist preludes, La fille aux cheveux de lin (‘The Girl with the Golden Hair’), and his Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp, one of the first major compositions for this ensemble.
South Indian multi-instrumentalist Vijay Venkat joins The Whitehall Road Sessions for a guest performance on the venu, a Hindustani classical flute, including a composition to Lord Rama by the great Carnatic composer, Thyagaraja.
