Kirklees Season Launch Concert
Kirklees Concert Season: Mozart and Bach Concertos
Celebrating the announcement of the Kirklees Concert Season 2021-22, this specially recorded performance sees the Orchestra of Opera North joined by pianist Ian Buckle in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 14, and violinist Jack Liebeck in Bach’s Double Violin Concerto.
With the conductor-less ensembles relying on incredibly close communication, these eighteenth-century masterpieces take on a new significance in our age of social distancing, as musicians and audiences look forward to the end of a long, enforced solitude.
Mozart himself played the piano at the 1784 premiere of his Piano Concerto No. 14, describing the work as ‘a concerto of a very special kind and written more for a small orchestra than a large one.’ A regular soloist with the Orchestra of Opera North, Ian Buckle brings warmth and intimacy to a virtuoso performance.
The brilliant British/German violinist Jack Liebeck is a Kirklees Concert Season favourite, having performed Bruch’s First Violin Concerto and Scottish Fantasy on his last two visits to Huddersfield Town Hall. Here he joins the Orchestra of Opera North’s Leader, David Greed, for some incendiary interplay on Bach’s only concerto for two violins. Bringing an extra spark to their simpatico partnership, both play eighteenth-century instruments made by the Italian master craftsman Giovanni Battista Guadagnini.
Kirklees Concert Season
For almost two decades, the Kirklees Concert season has brought world-class classical music to the Huddersfield and Dewsbury Town Halls, through a ground-breaking partnership between Opera North and Kirklees Council.
Last year’s season fell victim to the COVID pandemic, and after a year without live music or the chance to socialise in person, we’re looking forward to performing for the Concert Season’s loyal audience again in the autumn.
This concert, recorded at Opera North’s rehearsal studio, celebrates the return of music to Huddersfield and Dewsbury, and gives a wider audience a taste of the programme that Opera North and Kirklees Council bring to the Town Halls’ stages.
